Restorative Dentistry
Restorative Dentistry encompasses the disciplines of Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Endodontics including Implantology and the interaction of these specialties with each other to achieve a holistic treatment plan. It includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and management of the diseases of the oral cavity, teeth and surrounding structures. It mainly involves the oral rehabilitation of patients to ensure optimal functional, psychological, aesthetic outcomes, which can often warrant multidisciplinary working.
Restorative Dentistry includes dental specialities of Endodontics (which is the dental specialty concerned with the study and treatment of the dental pulp, such as root canal treatment). Periodontics (which is the dental speciality concerned with the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth such as gum disease and its management) and Prosthodontics including implantology (Prosthodontics is the dental speciality that includes removable prosthodontics for replacement of teeth with partial/ complete dentures and fixed prosthodontics such as provision of veneers, crowns and bridges; Implantology includes provision of dental implants and restoration with implant-retained dentures, crowns and bridges).
The Restorative Dentistry service at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital aims to serve a population network covering Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and part of Buckinghamshire (as per the footprint of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery network). It is a consultant-led service which provides restorative treatment for patients with:
- Head and Neck Cancer
- Hypodontia
- Cleft Lip and Palate
- Advanced / Severe Orofacial Trauma
- Diagnostic and treatment planning service for hereditary dental developmental defects including amelogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta.
