Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

About our service:

Occupational Therapists (OT) aim to provide support to people whose health prevents them doing the activities that matter to them. An occupational therapist can identify strengths and difficulties you may have in everyday life, such as dressing or getting to the shops, and will help you find practical solutions. These difficulties could be due to medical conditions, learning disabilities or mental health conditions. Occupational therapists work with people of all age, looking at all aspects of their daily lives, from the home to the school to the workplace.

Physiotherapists (PT) aim to restore movement and function when someone has been affected by injury, illness or disability. They help people achieve this through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. Physiotherapists encourage development and facilitate recovery, enabling people to remain independent for as long as possible. Physiotherapy can be helpful for people of all ages with a wide range of health conditions including, but not limited to, neurological, neuro-musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

The Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists often work collaboratively towards goal setting and treatment planning. A team of Therapy Technical Instructors and Therapy Assistants support the Physio’s and OT’s. They work generically across Physio and OT, their role is essential to ensure patients are working towards their goals. E.g. Progressing mobility from walking with wheeled walking frame to walking stick and facilitating patients to become independent with personal care tasks.
