Inpatient and Outpatient Paediatric Therapy

Woodlands Wards

The inpatient team treat children and young people admitted to the Paediatric Wards – Ward 24, 25, 26 and Paediatric Assessment Unit. We will assess and treat a variety of conditions including chest infections, asthma, post-surgery and those requiring developmental input. We will also assess babies on the Maternity Ward who are born with talipes, Erb’s palsy or other musculoskeletal concerns at birth. We work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and complete referrals for follow up care as required.

We also are a part of the MDT for Respiratory; particularly Cystic Fibrosis and Primary Cilliary Dyskinesia; attending clinics regularly. We share care with Great Ormond Street Hospital (CF) and the Royal Brompton Hospital  (PCD) and hold joint clinics with these teams as well.

NICU/SCBU

When your child is on the neonatal unit he/she may be referred to the physiotherapist.  This may be because your child:

  • Was born Prematurely (before 32 weeks)
  • Had a low birth weight (less than 1500g)
  • Received cooling or nitric oxide  treatment or
  • Has orthopaedic or neurological concerns

A Specialist Physiotherapist is an active member of the neonatal team at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital.  Our role is to promote your baby’s development and help you understand and learn more about their specific needs.

Following assessment the Physiotherapist may provide advice and activity ideas to promote your babies development and movements.  If you live locally and your baby requires ongoing physiotherapy they will be followed up as an outpatient at the Therapies Hub.  Alternatively your baby will be referred to the local Physiotherapy Team.

MSK Outpatients

The outpatient team provide assessment, treatment and management for children referred with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. We are able to help in a variety of ways with many conditions including talipes, Erb’s Palsy, torticollis, hypermobility, rheumatological conditions, MSK conditions, developmental variants, acute injuries and chronic pain.

We work alongside the MDT to promote health, wellbeing and therapeutic handling and educate parents and carers.

ESP clinics

These are run alongside the paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant clinic to provide triage of newly referred patients. This allows patients to be signposted to the correct services for on-going management and care; allowing for appropriate investigations, surgical approach, MDT involvement and definitive management to begin without delay.
