You have had a Transnasal Endoscopy today, with an Endoscope passed through your nose or mouth.
Please commence drinking water 30 minutes after having the numbing spray.
If your swallowing feels like it has returned to normal, you may eat and drink as you please.
Unless otherwise instructed by the doctor, you may resume your normal diet, 30 minutes after your procedure.
You may resume your normal prescription medicines unless otherwise advised on discharge.
There may be some slight soreness where the instrument has been but this will wear off in a couple of hours.
Some bloating may be experienced if air has remained in your stomach. This is not something to worry about; it will resolve itself naturally over the next few hours. However, if it gripes you, having a warm drink, or taking some peppermint water/tea and walking around, might help to provide some relief.
Common side effects of a Transnasal Endoscopy includes a sore nose or nosebleeds, which usually settle down on their own.
Nose Bleed (epistaxis) is not unusual after having a trans-nasal endoscopy. We recommend:
- Sit up with your head tilted forward. This is to prevent blood being swallowed.
- Pinch the soft part of your nose (below the hard nasal bones) between thumb and forefinger for at least 10 minutes without letting go.
- Place an icepack on the bridge of your nose (if available) or sit in a cool room.
- If after 20 minutes bleeding persists, go to your nearest emergency department.

FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE YOU MUST NOT DONATE BLOOD FOR 4-6 MONTHS
The reason for this is that your ability to donate blood in the future is dependent upon your diagnosis and the possibility that you might need to undergo further investigations or complete treatments. (British Society of Gastroenterology Guidance, Updated February 2020).
