Management of post-operative bariatric patients in primary care
When to refer:
Gastric bands
Emergency referral
- Abdominal pain, Pyrexia, Frank wound infection
- Chest pain, breathlessness, Tachycardia
- Continuous vomiting and epigastric pain
Urgent
- Intermittent vomiting and/or Heartburn and/or Nocturnal coughing
Routine
- No restriction, poor weight loss
- Weight regain
- Pregnancy (any time)
Gastric bypass
Emergency referral
- Abdominal pain, Pyrexia
- Chest pain, breathlessness, Tachycardia
- Continuous vomiting and/or dysphagia
- Clinical bowel obstruction (any time)
Urgent
- Intermittent abdominal pain
- Suspected dumping syndrome / reactive hypoglycaemia
Routine
- Weight regain
- Pregnancy (any time)
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Emergency referral
- Abdominal pain, Pyrexia
- Chest pain, breathlessness, Tachycardia
- Continuous vomiting and epigastric pain
Urgent
- Heartburn
Routine
- Intermittent abdominal pain
- Weight regain
- Pregnancy (any time)
