I have lived and worked in Bedford for 30 years and Bedford Hospital has been key for me in my role as a GP. I would like to use my experience to help my local community by supporting and promoting Bedford Hospital within the new Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Having worked as a GP Partner for many years my skills include. An understanding of the NHS as a complex organisation.
- Ability to listen and make balanced decisions on behalf of the entire community, with recognition of minority groups that may not be well represented.
- Awareness of financial accountability, and probity.
- Ability to work within a team of people with differing expertise.
- Ability to challenge decisions.
- I am loyal, committed and hardworking.

Bedford Hospital has been central to much of my adult life, I worked as a nursing auxiliary there at the beginning of my career, had two children in its wards and my late husband
Nurse/ Bed Manager there for over 20 years. I have a great love for the facility and would like to use my skills as a health and social care professional to contribute to the development of Bedford Hospital whilst it merges with Luton and Dunstable Hospital. It is important that both retain their own identities, whilst working in collaborative partnership to continue improving patient care.
I have over 35 years experience working in health and social care; currently as a consultant responsible for evaluating health and social care cases, interventions and services throughout England and Wales. This involves local government, central government and independent charities, at times requiring the need to act as a ‘critical friend’ to these organizations, identifying areas of excellence and requiring improvement; this has proven invaluable to understanding that when striving for a high quality service there is a need to ensure that this is supported by good financial housekeeping. In addition I have also worked as HM Inspector of Children’s Social Care and as a school governor, developing skills which enable me to provide balanced evaluations of public body strengths and weaknesses, communicating these to a variety of audiences.

I have lived in Bedford since 1965, served two terms on Bedford Council and County Council. Due to ill health over decade ago I become a kidney patient for over ten years, and now a recipient of a kidney transplant.
My personal experiences, and my contacts with NHS and other kidney disease sufferers, have made me a passionate advocate for kidney patients. Since retiring I have become increasingly involved in supporting both kidney and dementia patients in the wider community. I hold several voluntary appointments:
- Committee member and Trustee of the Lister Area Kidney Patients Association (LAKPA)
- Co-Vice Chair and Trustee of the National Kidney Federation
- Chair of the Bedfordshire Hospitals Organ Donation Committee
- Executive member of the United Kingdom Kidney Patients Council (UKKPC, UKKA)
- Member of the National Black, Asian, Mixed Race and Minority Ethnic Transplant Alliance (NBTA). NBTA leads on championing equality and blood donation among the groups.
In addition to working on improving patient facilities, I also organise social events for patients e.g., Sunday afternoon teas, seaside trips, etc.
To every one of these commitments, I give my full attention, priding myself on getting results.
I feel my experience, both as an NHS patient and staff member, and an advocate for others. I am well suited to take on the role of a Governor.
