Trauma and Orthopaedics (GP information)
Introduction
The Trauma and Orthopaedic Team provide a comprehensive service dealing with all acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems. We provide daily Fracture and Elective outpatient clinics in our recently, purpose built Orthopaedic Hub based on Dunstable Road. Many of our clinics our supported by Extended Scope Practitioners and Therapists who can offer on the spot advice and guidance.
We also provide major and minor orthopaedic surgery and have two orthopaedic theatres and one dedicated trauma theatre that run seven days a week. Our consultant-led service is renowned for its innovative approach and pioneering surgery. We have very competitive waiting to treatment times for our patients. Example wait times from March 2017 include Lower Limb (incl. foot) – 14 weeks; Upper Limb (incl. hand) – 15 weeks; Spinal – 19 weeks and Paediatric – 20 weeks.
Each year the team carry out over 5,000 orthopaedic surgical procedures for patients from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and beyond. As well as using keyhole surgery we deploy the latest computer-navigation techniques to ensure minimum trauma and maximum safety for our patients. When listed for surgery our lower limb patients will also be enrolled in our Enhanced Recovery Programme. This service offers extensive pre and post-operative advice and support to ensure that our patients have a reduced length of stay, reduced rate of infection and overall improved clinical outcome.
