Speciality Training
After successful completion of the Foundation programme and gaining the Foundation Programme Certificate of Completion (FPCC), you can go on to training in a chosen speciality, or general practice (GP) training.
Training programmes differ in length and structure according to speciality, i.e. general practice lasts three years, other specialties can last 5-8 years.
The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers numerous specialities across both sites – please click on the specialty for further information:
Emergency Medicine
Bedford Hospital Emergency Department has a long and proven track record of delivering high quality training in Emergency Medicine. The department sees around 80,000 – 90,000 patients a year. It has an integrated paediatric emergency department, injuries unit and is an active trauma unit with the East of England trauma network. The department is supported by the separately run on-site urgent treatment centre which absorbs lower acuity work away from the main department. We currently accommodate 2 ACCS trainees, 2 CT3 trainees and up to 8 higher specialist trainees. As well as regular teaching and educational development time trainees benefit from dedicated shifts across all areas of the department, locally organised simulation, ultrasound, and procedural skills days along with a ‘High Acuity Low Occurrence (HALO)’ training package. The educational faculty is well trained in educational supervision and actively encourage work place based assessments, we also have a number of RCEM examiners, who can offer 1 to 1 support with exams. Many of our trainees ask to extend or rotate back to us because of their positive experiences and the majority of our consultant body have been trainees with us in the past.
