SAS Doctors

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

At our trust, supporting newly employed SAS doctors is paramount to ensuring their seamless integration and professional growth within our healthcare system. This includes providing an appropriate contract, job plan and planned activities, incorporating supporting professional activities (SPA) time, conducting regular annual appraisals, ensuring an appropriate induction to their role, and most importantly, providing an educational supervisor to support and development related to applying for the portfolio pathway formerly known as Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), and SAS tutor for support.

Several SAS doctors at our trust have obtained specialist registration through the CESR pathway and are presently serving as consultants.

Bedford Hospital

SAS (Specialty, Associate Specialist and Specialist Doctors) are a diverse group of clinicians and at Bedford Hospital we are dedicated to the recruitment, training and retention of our SAS workforce. We recognise and encourage the essential contributions they make to the safe and efficient running of our clinical services and are committed to supporting their progression and development.

Our SAS team is here to assist and guide you through your career, whether you are new to the SAS role or a seasoned veteran. The SAS Tutor organises a series of training days every year, which are cherry picked to meet the educational and developmental needs of SAS doctors; addressing key aspects of the appraisal and revalidation process which have traditionally proven problematic to demonstrate. Competitive contracts, thorough Trust induction, robust job planning, designated Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) time to underpin Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and annual Appraisal are all pillars of our SAS support structure.

For those of you looking to progress from Specialty Doctor to Specialist the Trust offers a bespoke pathway for assessing your application – and will advise you on areas where your application may be lacking. Additionally the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) is well established here at Bedford with many Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) and SAS Doctors making successful applications each year. A significant number of these doctors remain within the Trust in Consultant positions and are available to guide you through your own application, should you need it.
