What is the Mess?
Based on the second floor of COMET, the junior medical & dental staff common room (Doctors’ Mess) is open 24 hours a day, accessed via ID swipe card It is a large room where medical & dental staff can relax and socialise with the added benefits of access to refreshments, television and PCs. The Mess is managed by a committee which is largely comprised of junior doctors. It meets every month to arrange social activities and to discuss key issues and actions. The committee welcomes suggestions and ideas from members, so please get involved.
Why be a Mess member?
- Access to refreshments (tea, biscuits, snacks, bean to cup coffee machine!)
- TV (with netflix), newspapers and magazines
- NHS computers and phone installed
- Microwave and fridge
- Rest facility for on calls, breaks & nights
- Networking opportunities (BMA/ medical defence unions hold drop in surgeries in the Mess)
- Subsidised/ free Mess socials for members
- Social opportunities with other L&D doctors
Previous Mess events:

All junior medical & dental staff are enrolled as mess members and the monthly £5 fee is deducted automatically by payroll. This small fee covers the upkeep of the facilities and for the regular social activities arranged throughout the year. It is important for the continued success of the mess that there is a regular and known income, so if you wish to ‘opt out’ of Mess membership, please contact the Medical Workforce Team. Please note that you can only opt out within 2-months of your start date and no option to opt back in (to be eligible for subsidised events) until the start of your new contract year (if applicable).
Locum staff are required to contribute £1.25 per week worked.
