Vascular
Bedfordshire vascular unit provides a 24/7 elective and emergency vascular service for the whole of Bedfordshire and Luton. Bedford Hospital is the ‘hub’ with outreach services at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. All major vascular work is undertaken at Bedford and all emergencies for the whole county are transferred here. Day case surgery, outpatient clinics and a ward referral service are provided at L&D.
Bedford Hospital’s vascular department is staffed by four consultants, a vascular specialist nurse, a clinical vascular scientist and various support and nursing staff who run five clinics a week, four all day theatre lists and two half day theatre lists. The department treats:
Venous conditions
varicose veins, venous ulcers, chronic venous insufficiency, arteriovenous malformations
Arterial conditions
peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery disease, aortic and peripheral aneurysms, diabetic foot disease
Lymphatic conditions
Lymphoedema
Other conditions treated include
thoracic outlet syndrome, hyperhydrosis, Raynaud’s disease
