Emergency Surgical Unit
On ESU, there is a variety of patients who are admitted through urgent GP referrals, A&E, other hospitals or GP Liaisons. The unit is fast paced and is a chance to learn many clinical skills and gain knowledge within different surgical specialities.
On ESU, they have 10 chairs and 14 beds/trolleys. Patients may be allocated to the “chairs” where they will have bloods and urine taken, observations checked and will be seen by a doctor from their speciality who will decide the course of treatment. Throughout each shift it is important that the Nurse in charge liaises with patient flow regarding transfers to other wards in order to assist the flow of patients around the hospital.
